In the heart of Silicon Valley

San Francisco is considered the New York of the West Coast and there is plenty for us to see. This morning we’ll collect our rental car and then we'll be off to explore! In the afternoon we’ll move away from the city and explore what is known as the Peninsula, the area between San Francisco Bay and the Pacific Ocean. Here is Silicon Valley, home to the world's most important technology companies.

We’ll find Google, which is a small town where employees get around by bicycle, then we'll be off to drop by Facebook to say hello to Zuckerberg. Lastly, we’ll find inspiration at Apple's headquarters. In the evening we’ll return to San Francisco for some original American cocktails!

Exploring San Francisco

Today we’ll explore more of San Francisco! Here in the 1960s, the city welcomed all the misfits of society - all those people who didn't feel at home anywhere else in America: hippies, gays, rebels, the beat generation... Even today, this liberal air can still be felt in the streets of San Francisco, walking through the Castro or Haight Street neighbourhoods. Let's spend the morning in these famous localities to get the right taste of the city and then, for lunch, we can move to Chestnut Street, full of restaurants: maybe today we'll try Mexican cuisine, definitely one of the best here in California!

We’ll spend the afternoon at the most famous monument in San Francisco: the Golden Gate Bridge. This red-coloured colossus is in the hearts of citizens and travellers alike - the best way to visit it? By bike! We can rent bikes and ride it all the way to one of the many viewpoints on the other side of the city. It's a bit of a struggle to reach some of them (it's a climb!) but the view is definitely worth the effort! We'll then return to the city, ready for another evening on the streets of San Francisco!

Between Alcatraz and the Twin Peaks

We can spend the afternoon trying to visit Alcatraz., the famous prison perched on a small island in the middle of the bay (remember to get your tickets well in advance!), or take a tour of the city. What not to miss? The 5 Sisters, Twin Peaks for the best view of the city, Coit Tower, winding Lombard Street, Pier 39... there's no shortage of choices!

Last morning in the city

We are taking it easy this morning: we can see more of San Francisco, but we can also enjoy our bed for an extra hour to save up some energy. What about a real American breakfast - one with pancakes, eggs, bacon, toast and hashbrowns, with a good cup of coffee that magically never runs dry. We can't leave the United States without this experience at least once!

Yosemite Park

In the afternoon we’ll set off: it’s time to say goodbye (reluctantly!) to San Francisco and discover the Californian countryside. Our final destination today is Yosemite National Park, one of the most beautiful parks in the United States. We’ll take our time, making a few stops along the way, until we reach the edge of the park where we’ll stop for the night.

Yosemite National Park: El Capitan and more natural beauty

To the valley!

We are ready to immerse ourselves in the nature of Yosemite National Park, a jewel among all the great American parks. Valleys carved by ice, rocks sculpted by the wind, waterfalls framing the crags, the forest that almost seems to breathe, especially in the early morning when the sun's rays warm the valley and a light mist begins to rise among the vegetation. Naturalist John Muir called it an 'Incomparable valley'; we're not surprised.

Discovering nature

Once inside the park, we can decide how to explore it. There are several trekking routes, some very simple and accessible to everyone, which can be done in an hour or so. Others are more complex, leading to unexpected views. We'll witness the beauty of El Capitan, an imposing rock skyscraper that attracts many climbing enthusiasts every year. This rock face has witnessed many incredible feats, the most memorable being that of Alex Honnold who made a free solo ascent, without any safety ropes.

There's plenty of wildlife around here, too, but if you want to spot any, you'll probably have to get away from the crowds and seek out some more secluded trails. Let's not miss the waterfalls, which are a must-see here in the valley. In the late afternoon, we bid farewell to this little paradise and set off again: our compass is pointing south!

Looking upwards

Before returning to the modern world, we have one more day to wander around Californian nature. Today we’ll dedicate the day to Sequoia National Park, home to giant, centuries-old sequoias. Among all the sequoias, the General Sherman stands out, one of the tallest and oldest in the park, measuring 84 metres. There is also the General Grant, which takes 20 people to hug!

We'll enjoy the park in all its beauty with plenty of trekking routes for all levels on offer. Without a doubt, it is worth climbing up to Moro Rock, an incredible viewpoint with a 360° view of the entire park with the Sierra Nevada dominating the horizon. From Beetle Rock there are killer sunsets: if the sun doesn't set too late, we can stay and enjoy the show.

Ocean Dunes State Park and Firestore Vineyards

This morning, we better wake up excited for San Luis Obispo!

Today, we'll visit Ocean Dunes State Park: a magical place that screams 'California'.

Once we get to the beach, we can rent an ATV and experience the thrill of driving over the sand dunes, or, for the sport fiends, we can embark on a trek and venture out to discover the natural beauty of this area. If we fancy relaxing, we can kick back on beach and enjoy the view of the ocean.

In the afternoon, we can head to one of the several vineyards of California, like Firestore Vineyards, and enjoy some fab wine and learn about our surroundings.

Beach Day!

We say goodbye to the Californian winelands and return to the ocean: today we’ll go to Santa Barbara! Tall palm trees blown by the wind, long white beaches that seem to have no end, modern houses alternating with old Hispanic-style buildings: we feel like we've stepped into a 90s TV show. We take the morning to calmly settle into the structure and then go to the beach to enjoy the sea. In the afternoon we can go shopping on State Street, known for its boutiques. We stroll along Stearns Wharf, the oldest wooden wharf in California, and enjoy a view of the city from Spanish Mission Hill - one of the most beautiful pieces of sacred architecture, made famous by none other than... Zorro! Santa Barbara is also ideal for those who love the nightlife: there are clubs, restaurants and discos to suit all tastes!

Let’s get it started!
We’ll wake up calmly and get back on the road: today we are finally going back to where the adventure began, Los Angeles! It's not a long drive from Santa Barbara, so we can enjoy this last real on-the-road trip. Once in the City of Angels, the first thing to do is... go to the famous "Hollywood" sign! We could gaze at it from afar or, if we're feeling athletic, follow the paths that take us as close as possible. The view of the city from up there is incredible, so it's worth it just for that alone!
Candyfloss Sunset
After all that hard work we deserve a good lunch - Los Angeles is also spoilt for choice when it comes to cuisine! We’ll then continue by visiting a few more city highlights, such as the Walk of Fame, looking for the stars of our favourite artists, or simply strolling through the houses of Beverly Hills, one of the city's most famous and wealthy neighbourhoods. In the mid-afternoon we head to the Griffith Observatory and wait for the sunset - it's one of the best places to watch it in LA! And then? We go out - there are plenty of bars and clubs here.

Universal Studios: let’s have some fun!

A day in the studios…
Today we’ll spend the whole day at Universal Studios! We can tour some of the iconic sets that have made film history - such as the one where the diver scene was filmed in the movie Jaws. There are lots of themed areas in the park: one dedicated to Jurassic Park, another to the Simpsons, another to the Minions... but the one that attracts the most visitors is the magical world of Harry Potter, where you can visit Hogwarts castle, buy a magic wand and taste butterbeer.
...Or not?
If the Universal Studios don't interest us - but we don't think it likely! - we can consider alternative ways to spend our day. Another popular amusement park here is Six Flags, where there are many adrenaline-pumping attractions. If we want to stay in the city, we can drop by the arts district, where the street walls are decorated with amazing graffiti, or go in search of some famous movie or TV series sets - like the haunted house from the first season of American Horror Story.

Venice Beach bike tour
Last day in California, last day in Los Angeles. Today we're going to the beach: we're moving to the Santa Monica and Venice Beach areas, undoubtedly among the most iconic in the whole city. The atmosphere here is already different, much more relaxed than in the rest of the city, which is a lot more hectic. We can rent skates, skateboards or bicycles and ride along the famous promenade. The stops to make? Muscle Beach, an open-air gym where bodybuilders and others train every day, and the canals of Venice, which are very reminiscent of Italy’s Venice.
Last night in California!
After eating some grilled cheese served with tomato soup - in the USA, one of the few truly original dishes of the place - we’ll spend the afternoon on the beach. The water is not exactly warm and pleasant - we are still on the ocean and the temperatures are more or less always very low. However, it is the right place to spend our last afternoon together: we can organise a beach volleyball tournament (the losing team pays for everyone's drinks!) and then move to the Santa Monica pier to wait for the sunset. This evening we will have a farewell dinner, the perfect time to relive our adventure!
