Itinerary - Basque Country Express: from Bilbao to San Sebastian
Welcome to the Basque Country
International travel to and from the Basque Country is not included in the price of the trip, so you can decide where to start from, at what time and how you prefer to arrive... We do it this way to give you maximum freedom of choice! Remember that this trip begins in Bilbao and ends in San Sebastián.
Bilbao, crossed by the Nervion, hosted most of the country's industry for many years. It is full of secrets and incredible places and we are looking forward to discovering all that this part of northern Spain has to offer. Besides, we have to meet up for the welcome meeting and toast! We start getting to know those who will accompany us during this adventure with some cider and pintxos. Let's go!
Welcome drink included in the price of the trip. Food and beverages at the expense of each participant.
Museums or dragons?
We wake up full of energy and ready to face a great day full of surprises. Any Game of Thrones fans in the group? In the morning we can choose to follow in Daenerys' footsteps and get closer to her Rocadragon castle! Let's see, maybe we exaggerated a bit, eh, there is no castle or dragons, but here they filmed a good part of the last seasons of the series, and in San Juan de Gaztelugatxe we find a spectacular landscape on the shores of the Cantabrian Sea that will leave us speechless.
After a little culture? No problem! We can opt for a visit to the Guggenheim Museum. Already the design of the building leaves us speechless: it was commissioned to one of the greatest architects of recent decades, the Canadian Frank O. Gehry. The works that we will see will be among the most avant-garde, both by Spanish and international artists.
Exploring the city
After a busy morning we are going to discover all the secrets of Bilbao. We will pass through the old town or Zazpi Kaleak, the Arriaga Theater built in honor of the "Spanish Mozart". Do you know what they were called? Here we will find out. We will have a txakoli - local wine that is poured from a height - in the Mercado de La Ribera and we will cross the famous Bridge of Bizkaia. And for dinner some pintxos? We can hop from tiny restaurant to tiny restaurant, eating small but super tasty morsels. It really is one of Europe’s great dining experiences.
Activities and income included in the common fund. Food and drink paid for by individual participants.
Today we say goodbye to Bilbao to greet its sister and neighbor: San Sebastián. Along the way we will be able to admire the wonderful landscapes that the north of Spain provides: two worlds between the green of the mountains and meadows and the intense blue of the Cantabrian Sea. After Check-in at the hotel that will be our home for the next two days, we are ready to discover the city (and get hungry!)
San Sebastian is a film city, not only because of the well-known festival, but because its streets, beaches and monuments are truly from a movie. We will take advantage of the morning to take a walk through the most emblematic areas. Going down the Old Town we will arrive at the Church of the Good Shepherd, the promenade of the famous Playa de la Concha and the Peine de los Vientos. If we have time, we can also climb Mount Urgull to have the best views of the city. Again, and of course, there will be a route of the best pintxos to eat: gastronomy is a fundamental part when it comes to getting to know a city! In the afternoon we can continue walking or have free time to do some shopping.
Public transport from Bilbao to San Sebastián included in the trip rate. Activities and income included in the common fund. Food and drink by each participant.
The Zumaia Flysch
Today we are going to discover on foot one of the most unique places in this region. The Zumaia Flysch, a spectacular geological phenomenon on the shores of the Bay of Biscay with outcrops of layers of sedimentary rocks created at the bottom of the ocean that served to understand the extinction of the dinosaurs, and which still attracts geologists from all over the world who search in This great natural book answers the behavior of our planet! Also, for Game of Thrones fans, this was another setting from the last seasons of the series!
Sunset from Igeldo
In the afternoon, if we have any energy left, we can climb Mount Igeldo to have the best views of the city and take the last photos of the trip. San Sebastián is an impressive setting and we deserve a group photo with this background. After the walk and the views, we prepare for the farewell dinner. It has been a few days but very intense, enough to get to know two incredible cities and wonderful people that we will always take with us. Let's toast to all the special moments we’ve enjoyed and to the next adventure that will surely be sooner than we expect!
Transportation to Zumaia for the Flysch hiking route and farewell dinner included in the trip fee. Food and drink by each participant.
